Yüksekova (Kurdish: Gever; Assyrian: Gawar) is a district of Hakkari Province of Turkey, situated close to the border with Iran. Yüksekova was the scene of clashes between protesting Kurds and Turkish riot police in 2006. [1]

Among Kurds and Assyrians, the region is called "Gawar" or "Gever". Gawar was also the location of mass atrocities committed by the Ottoman empire on the Assyrian community in the 19th century, thousands of Christian gawar Assyrian villagers were killed or forced to convert to Islam. During World War I most of the remaining Assyrian community in Gawar was massacred.
