  • Khalilzad says he made no mistake by contacting PPP

New York, Sept.4 ANI: The United States envoy to the United Nations, Z. Khalilzad, has said he made no mistake in establishing contacts with PPP, adding that the interactions were purely of social nature.A former US envoy to both Afghanistan and Iraq, he said he had for years maintained friendships and relationships with many people in the broader Middle East, including Afghanistan and Pakistan."These contacts and relationships have been useful for the United States but at the same time I am experienced enough to know the difference between being a channel with these friends on behalf of the United States and having social contacts particularly with regard to the Bhutto family," The News quoted Khalilzad, as saying. He said he had had mostly "social contacts" with the Bhutto couple since Benazir, a former Pakistani prime minister, returned from exile to Pakistan in October 2007 and in the aftermath of her assassination two months later.Noting these contacts were "perfectly natural", he insisted that he had reported them to US Secretary of State "and relevant officials" whenever policy issues had been raised. And he strenuously denied having acted as an advisor to Zardari. ANI

  • Palin's son heads for military service in Iraq

London, Sept.4 ANI: Alaska Governor Sarah Palin's son, Track, will be heading for the Middle East next week to prepare for military service in one of the most dangerous corners of Iraq. A year after enlisting in the US Army on the sixth anniversary of 9/11, Private First Class Palin will fly to Kuwait next Thursday for acclimatisation, and will be deployed a few weeks later to an area of Diyala province teeming with al-Qaeda insurgents. It will not be an easy tour for the 19-year old, who is assigned to 1-1 Bravo Company, 52nd Infantry, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division, based at Fort Wainwright, Alaska, reports The Times. Diyala remains a hotbed of the Sunni insurgency. American military intelligence estimates there are still around 150 hardcore al-Qaeda fighters in the province, backed up by between 200 and 400 armed bandits who will fight for whoever pays them most. Diyala is also littered with improvised explosive devices IED's - there were 82 bomb blasts in a particularly kinetic two and a half month period. The fact that Track Palin's mother is a potential vice-president could mean that he could be teased a lot, say soldiers already posted in Diyala."Will it be hard Yes. If it was me and my parent was a vice-presidential candidate or the vice-president, it would be hard. It gives you a celebrity status," the paper quoted Captain Stephen Thibodeau, 30, as saying.Thibodeau is on his second tour in Iraq, with the 2nd Stryker Cavlary Regiment, based in Vilseck, Germany. Private Palin will be one of about 4,600 US troops serving in Diyala and will be protected by some of the best armour money can by. He could also possibly meet up with Beau Biden, 39, currently serving as a Captain in the Delaware National Guard and will be in Iraq at the same time. His father is Democratic vice-president candidate Joe Biden. ANI

  • Doncaster girl masterminded Arab takeover of Manchester City

London, Sept.3 ANI: A 35-year-old modern languages graduate, and financier, Amanda Staveley, reportedly masterminded the daring takeover of Manchester City by an Arab consortium. Thirteen years ago, Amanda reportedly rose at 4 a.m. every day to cook and strip the meat from dozens of chickens, and she had little idea that her pre-dawn catering activities would open the door to the glittering world of high finance and the billions of dollars at the disposal of the Arabian Gulf's ruling sheikhs. After persuading a bank manager to lend her 180,000 pounds to set up a restaurant in rural Cambridgeshire, Amanda opened her Stocks eatery close to the British horseracing hub of Newmarket. It became popular among leading members of area's equestrian elite. The patrons of the restaurant, where the proprietor would muck in while also dabbling in her alternative career of dealing in shares worth thousands of pounds, included senior staff from the Godolphin stables owned by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum, the ruler of Dubai and the most powerful racehorse owner on the planet. It was the beginning of an association between Amanda, now 35 and a multimillionaire businesswoman, and the Middle East's wealthiest figures that reached a spectacular culmination yesterday with the news that English club football had gained a proprietor to outshine the riches of even Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich in Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed al Nahyan. The new owner of Manchester City FC, who is the brother of the ruler of Abu Dhabi, the biggest of the United Arab Emirates, and has access to an estimated fortune of 550 billion pounds to fund foreign acquisitions, and his advisers spent two weeks negotiating with the Yorkshire woman before tying up a deal.It was evidence of the growing status of Amanda Staveley - whose life has waxed and waned from turning down a proposal from Prince Andrew to becoming a non-executive director of a company marketing a cream similar to Viagra - in the testosterone-fuelled world of the Premiership, that she acted as the lynchpin in a sale that has the potential to transform European football.Although she was acting for City and its previous owner, the former Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, it is understood that Amanda 's credentials among Middle Eastern royalty were key to the sale being completed.
